How reliable the data is

The most important sentence on this page: the data in Olector is entered by people and nobody verifies it. Anyone can type any name, weight, year, price or description — and none of it is binding in any way. Not on us, not on you, not on the other party to a transaction.

Where the data comes from

• From users. Item descriptions, photographs, offer titles, valuations, locations and nicknames are entered by collectors themselves.
• From shop websites. Prices and part of the catalogue data are collected automatically from dealer sites. The importer reads whatever happens to be on the page — and pages can be out of date, incomplete or simply wrong.
• From a catalogue that was also built partly automatically. Artefact attributes — weight, fineness, mintage, diameter — largely come from imports. Mistakes happen and we do fix them, but only once somebody reports them.

What we do not do

• We do not verify identity. An account is created with an email address or through Google, Facebook or Reddit. Nobody checks who is really on the other side.
• We do not confirm authenticity or condition. We do not examine items, issue opinions or perform grading.
• We do not handle payments. Money does not pass through the service. There is no deposit, no escrow and no refund mechanism — settlement is strictly between the parties.
• We do not appraise. The amount shown next to an item is either the weight converted at the metal spot price, or a number the owner typed in. Neither is a professional appraisal.

What you can count on

• You decide what is visible. For each item separately you set the visibility of the item itself, of its location, and of your identity as its owner.
• Nobody writes to you without your consent. A conversation requires the other side to accept the invitation.
• We act on reports. Unlawful or misleading content is removed and the account may be suspended.

What this means for you

Treat Olector as a starting point, not a source of certain information. Before buying, confirm the price and availability with the seller, and the item's parameters with whoever listed it or with an independent source. In a transaction between private individuals, all arrangements and all risk rest with those individuals.
